Cortney Herndon
One thing we’ve learned through the years is everyone participates for a different reason! This story was shared by Neal Herndon as to why their team “Rocking H Runs for C” participates in Bridge2Bridge.
“I created Rocking H Runs for C in honor of my beautiful wife Cortney Herndon, the love of my life since we were 15-years old and the toughest person that I know. Cortney was diagnosed with breast cancer on June 3, 2015, at 35-years old. Ironically, she had just participated in her first Bridge2Bridge run about 6-weeks prior. At the time, our son Jackson was 9-years old, our daughter Maya was 7-years old, and our youngest daughter Addison was 3-years old. As it is true for every family, we were devastated when the doctor said, “It’s cancer.” But the Lord had already impressed upon Cortney that the bad news was coming, so we were not surprised by the diagnosis. We knew that we were in for the fight of our lives, but we also knew that we were not going to be fighting alone. In our corner was Jesus, our precious kids, both sides of our family, our church Swansonville PH, and Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer Association. In retrospect, it really wasn’t a fair fight! We really could not have done what had to be done without each…the support we received still astonishes and humbles me to this day. We were truly carried by many for about 18-months. After treatment and twelve surgeries in twelve months, Cortney was declared cancer free and on her way to recovery.
To this day, although with daily side effects, she remains cancer free; something that we are eternally grateful for. I am not sure why some share the same outcome as us, but some are less fortunate. Rocking H Runs for C and all the cancer survivors like Cortney that have battled and still battle to be labeled a survivor. Rocking H Runs for C also runs for those that will one day receive that life altering diagnosis. Finally, Rocking H Runs for C runs for those that fought the good fight, and their time here on earth was all too short… to those individuals and their families, we continue to stand with you and run for you.” - Neal Herndon
