In years past, the Cape Fear Cylists have used the funds generated by the Tour de Blueberry to award grants to organizations in our community. In 2022, we are proud to have raised $11,000 for local non-profits and our very own Terry Benjey Bicycling Foundation. Your donation will go towards organizations like these:
UNCW Blueberry Festival Scholarship: Awards are used towards the payment of tuition, fees, or books for students from Pender and New Hanover County.
Burgaw Middle School/PTA: Our grant to Burgaw Middle School in 2022 was $2500. The funds have not been allocated, but will provide teachers and staff with the tools they need to educate the 6th - 8th graders at one of the oldest schools in Pender County.
Hampstead Hams: This organization of amateur Ham radio operators assist us every year on ride day to relay messages from riders and volunteers to our home base at the Burgaw Middle School.
Terry Benjey Bicycling Foundation: The Terry Benjey Bicycling Foundation (TBBF) was founded in honor of a long time cyclist and cycling advocate in the Cape Fear Region. Terry was one of the cyclists that formed the Cape Fear Cyclists club over 35 years ago. In the ensuing years he promoted cycling, cycling events and cycling facilities. Although Terry was killed in a cycling accident in 2013 and the Foundation was formed to perpetuate his vision and goals for cycling in our region. It is through the Foundation that Terry's legacy and vision lives on. Funds from the Tour de Blueberry have gone towards design, funding and construction of cycling facilities and youth cycling education, bike handling skills and bicycle maintenance.
Sand Hills A.M.E. Church & the Penderlea Volunteer Fire Department: Both of these organizations have been and integral part of our Tour de Blueberry these past few years. Their grant awards last year were $500 each.
