Description

K-Town On the River (KTOR) is the fourth and final race of the LB Endurance Open Water Triathlon series. LB Endurance is excited to offer previews of the swim, bike and run courses for KTOR triathlons, to be contested on 03 August 2024.

There are FOUR different previews and an Open Water Swim Clinic, and you may participate in any number of the previews (or all of them, if you want!):

  • Run = Wednesday 10 July, 6:00 pm
  • Open Water Swim Clinic = Sunday 14 July, 7:30 am
  • Swim #1 = Sunday 14 July, 8:45 am
  • Swim #2 = Thursday 18 July, 6:00 pm
  • Bike = Sunday 21 July, 8:00 am

PILOTS for the SWIM previews are also asked to register, simply to help us with organization and communication. Thank you!  And we need pilots!!

All preview attendees are required to register for this preview (not the race) prior to participation in the preview. The previews are FREE.

Personal Best Racing is the producer of KTOR. Registration in the preview dates does NOT include race registration. To register for KTOR and get all the race details, visit the race website. Preview participants do NOT have to participate in the races.

The purpose of the previews is to allow a safe scouting of the KTOR courses in non-race conditions, with a group. Participants may ask questions and evaluate the course. The previews are not races, and participants may complete all or only part of the courses. The preview organizers can not communicate every detail nor foresee every hazard, so participants are asked to look at the race courses and maps PRIOR to arrival.

Participants should bring all equipment, clothing, gear, nutrition and hydration they may need. Participants are responsible for their own fitness and preparedness to ride safely on open roads in a group, run within their fitness, and/or swim safely in open water with current.

ANY preview may be canceled if unsafe weather conditions exist in the area; the preview may or may not be re-scheduled. Notification will be made via email to registered participants and on Social Media @lbendurance.

RUN PREVIEW

Location:  Meet at LB Endurance Lab, 1119 Sevier Ave, Knoxville TN 37920.

PARKING is limited at LBE Lab. Please leave 3-4 spots open for our neighbors! Use Suttree Landing Park, street spots, etc.

6:00 pm - Safety Briefing and Course Instructions.

6:10 pm - Start RUN.

Runners may choose the Sprint course (5k), the Olympic course (10k) or the Half Course (up to 13.1 miles). Link to Course Maps.
Runners will depart together in distance/pace-based groups. We will have leaders for each distance. This is not NO-DROP - the courses are essentially out-and-back, so you can turn around at any time. Anyone may run or walk at their chosen paces.

NOTE for the HALF run course, the terminal section at the turn-around is done TWICE - we will help you all understand this (past racers have made mistakes here).
All participants are requested to download the run course to their smartphone, watch or other navigation device.
The run courses use the sides/shoulders of open roads, sidewalks and greenway.  There may be uneven terrain. There are some active driveway and road crossings - please use caution and yield to traffic.

Open Water Swim Clinic (before Swim Preview #1)

This optional open water swim clinic by LB Endurance Lab Coach(es) will review specific skills for safer and faster open-water swimming. A special focus will be placed on swimming with current, handling different conditions (temperature, wind, sun, etc), sighting techniques and maximizing mental preparedness.

The price is $20 for non-RTMC members. RTMC members may use their club-provided discount code to participate for free.

SWIM PREVIEW #1 (with RTMC)
Location:  Meet at Suttree Landing Park Pavilion.

Parking can be limited at both SL Park and Island Home Park; we must maximize carpooling to reduce our impact on others enjoying these Parks!

7:30 am - RTMC Club members and Clinic participants arrive for clinic from 7:45-8:45 am at the SL Park Pavilion

8:45 am - PILOTS and Preview Swim-only participants arrive. Pilots unload.

9:00 am - Pilot Briefing. Pilots will launch (swimmers help take watercraft to dock). Pilots will paddle up from Suttree Landing to the swim starts (takes 20-25 minutes). Each watercraft must have a PFD.

9:10 am - Swimmer Briefing. We'll announce water temperature. Swimmers may wear wetsuits. All swimmers are REQUIRED to wear a bright colored swim cap, and all are encouraged to wear an inflatable swim buoy (not required). Swimmers declare distance.

We will shuttle swimmers, using personal automobiles, to the swim starts. Island Home Park is where HALF (2200m) and OLYMPIC (1800m) swimmers will start.  SPRINT swimmers (1200m) will start at the Danger Sign by Rivers Edge Apartments. Half swimmers may go upstream 200m before turning to head downstream.  Olympic and Sprint swimmers will go downstream the whole way.

9:30 am - approximate swim start (once pilots are in place).

11:00 am - all swimmers must be out of the water at Suttree Landing; anyone unable to complete the course in this time will be aided by a pilot to the nearest river exit.

REMINDER - this is NOT a coached session, nor a swim lesson. All participants are expected to have the ability to independently swim their chosen distance in a river current. The River is open to boats, wind, may contain debris, have a variable current, and temperatures may range from 65-78 degF. Pilots are volunteers and they are present to help protect all swimmers from boats, warn of debris or changing conditions.
