In June, 2023, I led a student group from Georgetown Prep to Guatemala City, in order to collaborate with Safe Passage, an organization that helps residents envision and create a life beyond the city garbage dump. For years, many residents have been caught in a cycle of poverty in which their lives center around picking through trash to find recyclable materials to sell, and to salvage items they can use to build their homes. Through the incredible work of Safe Passage, which provides education for children and adolescents and job training for adults, they have helped countless community members find more dignified work and ultimately move out of this garbage dump community. Having seen their extraordinary work firsthand, I am seeking to support Safe Passage as they continue in their incredible life-giving work.
