Teaching Inclusion: A Journey with My Son
From the moment my son was old enough to understand the world around him, I knew I wanted to instill in him the values of kindness, empathy, and inclusivity. My work provides the perfect opportunity to teach him these lessons in a meaningful way.
At first, he was naturally curious. "Mom, why does he talk like that?" "Why does she need a wheelchair?" His questions were innocent, and I welcomed them. Each one was an opportunity to introduce him to a world that, while different from what he was used to, was rich with diversity and humanity. I explained that everyone has unique abilities and challenges, and that our differences make us special, not separate.
As he grew older, I began bringing him along to events at Friendship Community. He met my colleagues and the Individuals we support. He watched as we provided encouragement, and shared laughter with people who, to him, had once seemed so different. Slowly, those differences have faded in his eyes, replaced by friendships, stories, and shared experiences. I am passionate about teaching my son the importance of accepting all people, regardless of ability.
This fundraiser is another way for Bryson and I to contribute to the well-being of the Individuals supported by Friendship Community! 💙
